Auditions for Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play
Public · Hosted by Verge Theater Company
Verge Theatre Company is auditioning actors of all ethnicities, genders, identities, and orientations for the production MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY by Ann Washburn, directed by Amanda Card.
We are looking for 8 actors for this unconventional piece. Strong ensemble skills a must. There is singing. You do not have to be good at it, just brave enough to try.
Throughout the process, the ensemble will work together to create devised movement. Previous knowledge of this technique is not required and all actors are encouraged to audition regardless of movement training/experience.
Rehearsals will take place at The Barbershop Theatre 3/4 times a week, Sundays through Thursdays between the dates of May 5 and June 6. The rehearsal schedule will be built around actor availability.
Performances will be the evenings of June 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 & 23. No daytime performances.
There are two time slots for auditions: 12:00 and 2:30. Sign up for the time that works best for you here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080C4EACAA28A3F85-mrburns
Auditions will consist of group devising exercises as well as cold reads from the script. Please wear comfortable clothes you can move in, and closed toe shoes.
Callbacks will take place the evening of April 1 (We’ll let you know the evening of March 31 if we need to see you read again, and we’ll e-mail you your sides. Not receiving a callback does not necessarily mean that you are not being considered for the show).

Play summary from Samuel French:
“Anne Washburn’s imaginative dark comedy propels us forward nearly a century, following a new civilization stumbling into its future.
After the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of “The Simpsons” episode “Cape Feare” entirely from memory. 7 years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles, and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past. 75 years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created.
A paean to live theater, and the resilience of Bart Simpson through the ages, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.”
Time period: Contemporary / The Future
Setting: This play is set in the very near future. Then 7 years after that. Then 75 years after that.
Small stipend for actors.
